J W Benson 8 Day "Campaign" Mantle Clock, c.1900
An attractive oak case 8 day "Campaign" mantle clock, made in England by J. W. Benson, London. Presented in wonderful original condition, in good working order and complete with its key. Unlike traditional mantle clocks a good Campaign clock, as with this one, features a heavy and robust movement that uses a platform escapement. These are operated by a balance wheel and not a pendulum, allowing the clock to run in all positions, so a perfectly level shelf is not required. The use of such escapements and given the clock's reduced dimensions, standing at just 8 inches in height, make the clock very portable, ideal for an officer's trunk. Likewise, to protect the movement in transit, the case design has the top extending to protect the thick crystal glass and the general construction of the body is from solid oak - not like a typical panelled wooden box, in fact, everything about this clock is built to last.
J.W. Benson, the renowned London watchmaker, has a significant military history, particularly during World War I and World War II. They were official watchmakers to the Admiralty and the War Department and held several Royal Warrants, including one from Queen Victoria.
This compact clock is clean and unrestored and a collector grade example that has survived remarkably well with golden age patina.
A great every day clock sold in working order; however, as a bonus, should this clock require further attention in the 12 months after purchase, it is subject to our free servicing and adjustment warranty.
